Daniel Johnston
A nice and talented person that I admire, rather than "an artist", is called Daniel Johnston. I know about him thanks to internet in 2009. He is an American designer, cartoonist and songwriter, being known as a fundamental figure for
the alternative music, basically because he makes his own cassettes, plays and
produces every record and he distributes his own music. Another cool thing is
that Johnston designed every cover and used to give away the hand-made cassettes to anyone who wanted it, and that's how he got to be famous.
He has had a very complicated life. He's been diagnosticated as a bipolar, and one time he had a maniac episode when he and his father were flying on an aeroplane. He took the plane keys and threw them away. The plane crashed but luckily they got out of it alive, but they put Daniel Johnston in a psychiatric centre.
I like Daniel Johnston because he has managed to canalize his misfortunes into beautiful but simple things. He fell in love with a girl –an unrequited love– and recorded over 100 songs about her in his bedroom. There's something about his work that is simple but yet very difficult at the same time.
